A retaining wall's price depends mostly on how long and how tall it is, what it's built from, and how much drainage and digging your yard needs. This guide pulls together published 2026 figures for the Indianapolis area. Every number is cited and listed at the bottom. They're estimates, not quotes.
Cost by wall length
Length and height drive the price more than anything else, so start with how many linear feet you need.

| Wall length | Average cost range | Average |
|---|---|---|
| 10 linear ft | $900–$2,400 | $1,650 |

| 50 linear ft | $4,500–$12,000 | $8,250 |
| 100 linear ft | $9,000–$24,000 | $16,500 |
| 150 linear ft | $13,500–$36,000 | $24,750 |

Put another way, Angi's table works out to roughly $90–$240 per linear foot (our arithmetic). The low end is a 3 ft wall and the high end a 6 ft wall. To estimate by area instead, multiply length by exposed height and use $30–$40 per sq ft1.
Cost by wall material
Material changes the per-square-foot price more than anything except height.

These are Angi's all-in Indianapolis figures1.
| Material | Per sq ft of face (all-in) | Average |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $10–$15 | $12.50 |
| Timber | $15–$30 | $22.50 |
| Railroad ties | $25–$30 | $27.50 |
| Brick | $20–$40 | $30 |
| Concrete | $20–$55 | $37.50 |
| Gabion | $10–$55 | $32.50 |
| Stone | $20–$100 | $60 |
| Steel | $15–$150 | $82.50 |

Extras that change the total
The wall itself is only part of the bill.

Site work, drainage and engineering can add as much again on difficult lots.
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Labor | $50–$75/hour, or $15–$50 per sq ft |
| Material delivery | $50–$200 per truckload |
| Land clearing | $500–$1,000 |
| Land grading | $900–$2,600 |
| Drainage fixes | $500–$7,000 |
| Remove old wall and rebuild | $20–$30 per linear ft |
| Rebar reinforcement | $0.80–$1.60 per sq ft |
| Waterproofing | $2–$10 per sq ft |
| Structural engineer | $95–$115/hour |
| Building permit | $100–$500 |

Height, engineering and permits
Height is where cost and risk climb together.

Angi advises a structural engineer for walls over 4 ft1. The City of Indianapolis exempts retaining walls 4 ft or less in height that don't support a surcharge, such as a driveway or slope above. Taller or load-bearing walls need a permit2.
Suburbs set their own rules, so check with your city or town (our service area pages link to each permit office). Before any digging, Indiana 811 asks homeowners and contractors to request a utility locate at least two full working days ahead3.
Why drainage decides how long a wall lasts
Water trapped behind a wall adds pressure on top of the weight of the soil.

Drainage is a high priority in Indianapolis, where some areas have poorly draining clay1. A properly built wall typically has clean drainage stone behind it, a perforated drain pipe at the base and somewhere for that water to go.
Clay soils generally need more reinforcement and more careful drainage, both of which add cost1. If a bid is far below the others, ask what it leaves out. Drainage is a common place to cut corners. More on clay-lot walls: retaining walls in Fishers and Carmel.
Does a retaining wall add value?
A wall adds the most value when it solves a problem: turning a slope into usable yard, stopping erosion or fixing drainage.

A purely decorative wall may add curb appeal without changing what your home is worth1. Many homeowners pair a wall with a patio on the level ground it creates. See our paver patio cost guide to budget for both.
